I love that band name. You can attach any number of things to the end and it works. Anyway, She Keeps Bees is over here all summer! ‘Here’ being Europe, and she has quite a few London dates and hopefully more to come.

She’s got a show at 229 presented by Club Shuffle, tickets are just £6. I bought one already. EAGER! She also has a residency of sorts at The Britannia pub by Victoria Park, put on by The Local. They put on good stuff. Shame it’s a bit hard to get to (especially as I don’t know where I’ll be living) but I shall try and make it over there. They’re also playing End of the Road (!). One of the must see acts. I can’t wait! Here is her Myspace.

Cryptacize have just been a goldmine of brilliance ever since I first heard them. Firstly, their albums are brilliant. Secondly, they are a brilliant live band.

On top of that, Nedelle is a brilliant solo artist. After watching the band a few times this week I researched them a little and found she has her own solo project. I listened to The Locksmith Cometh three or four times in a row on Friday at work. Lastfm says “Nedelle grew up studying classical violin and performing in musicals, with hopes of a Broadway career”. You can really hear the show tunes/musicals influence, it’s a brilliant pop record. You can hear some songs on Lastfm. Look at how many times I’ve used the word ‘brilliant’ in this post. Did I mention she’s got a brilliant voice? She has. Brilliant.

In my attempt to avoid the boring things I have to do I went for a wander in the sun. It was nice, I strolled about and found an extortionate ice cream vendor down by St Paul’s. Then on my way back I walked past the Museum of London and thought I may as well stop in for a while. I had a look at all the cool ancient things. Here is an interesting fact: when the stocking frame, a type of loom, was invented Queen Elizabeth banned it to protect the livelihood of the weavers/knitters. Isn’t that nice? The inventor moved to France and sold them there. Eventually after he died they were allowed over here. Tudor history = interesting stuff.

Anyway, on a more music-related note, I let Ema and the Ghosts be my soundtrack to the museum. She’s so brilliant, someone needs to get her over here to play some shows. SEE:

Amazing.

Album of the week at Rough Trade, see:

Ah Rough Trade, they know where it’s at.

In case you’re not familiar with Flowerpot yet, it’s basically a music venue in Kentish Town that offers a band and a guest DJ every night. Not only that, for FREE. Last month I only made it to Kid Harpoon but they also had Peggy Sue, Jay Jay Pistolet and some other goodens.

The lineup for June is on their Myspace. I haven’t heard most of the bands. Alessi is the DJ on the 24th. I don’t know how many Alessis there are but I’m guessing it’s THE Alessi. As in the really cool one that has the Ark. Sweet.

I’m listening to Wildbirds & Peacedrums. I have lots of things I need to do today that I somehow evaded doing yesterday. But first, I need food.

A show presented by Duke of Uke in some random posh house in Bloomsbury. I felt a bit out of place, everyone was old(er than me) and drinking glasses of wine. But I like it, it’s nice to go to a mix of shows.

They let us in (you had to buzz the doorbell to get in) and they shepherded us into a room with lots of glasses of wine for sale. They didn’t let us into the main room for a while, clever, clever. When they did let us in, the whole front row was reserved so we took seats in the second row. At first I rated my chair a solid 7/10 but by the end of the night I would have given it 4. The setting was lovely, it was like a room in the National Portrait Gallery, tons of portraits all over the walls.

The first act was a gentleman called Stuart Silver, it was mostly spoken word with a bit of ukulele here and there. Honeybear from California/Calgary played next. His set was composed entirely of ukulele covers which were sweet and pleasant. I would have much preferred to have heard original material though.

So, after some waiting around, Serafina took to the tiny stage accompanied by her friend Polly. Finally! This is what I paid money for, real music! What a talent! She played the harp and sang beautifully, and instead of doing the all too familiar looping trick (I do love the loops, but it was refreshing to have everything done then and there) Polly sang harmonies with her. The harmonies were to die for. They did a cover of Suedehead, and she attempted a Daniel Johnston cover but gave up after about one line. It was sweet and endearing, the awkward stage banter was charming. What a good find. I’ve actually known about her for over a year, she was on the lineup to play with Chris Garneau at the Barfly last May and I investigated her then, but she never played. A shame indeed, you definately need to go see this lady perform live. Her Myspace is here.

My only complaint of this whole evening is that there was literally equal ‘interlude’ time to actual music playing time, all of the acts played short sets. I figure it’s just a ploy to sell more wine. Hmpfff.

Woodpigeon were the headliners. I’ve seen Mark play twice before but this was the first time with a full band. It was lovely, I like Woodpgeon alot. They hail from Calgary and released Treasury Library Canada over here this year and Songbook last year. Both albums are very good and I would recommend them. I loved the full band sound, very lovely indeed.

On the way out I got to say hi to Mark, it’s been ages since I last saw him. The band had flown from Sweden the day before and were flying to Calgary the next. Phew, exhausting! If you are yet to see Woodpigeon, here is their Myspace, go go go!

Scary Mansion- Look Through

Leah Hayes, such a talented lady. I love everything she’s done (even her bizarre Bad Lobotomy thing has grown on me), her drawings are great and her book is wonderful. If you want to borrow it, tell me. When Scary Mansion comes to London, if their show clashed with Wildbirds & Peacedrums, I would go to Scary Mansion. Surely that is testament to how brilliant I think this band is? Yes.

Lunchtime at Pure Groove. I like YACHT, Jona seems awesome. He used to do this thing about a year ago every day on Flickr where he’d post a video and let everyone comment asking questions, then in the next video (videos on Flickr can only be 90 seconds long) he would try and answer as many as possible. I asked him questions a couple of times. I remember asking if he liked red pandas and in his video he said he didn’t know what they are. Red pandas are my favourite! Last year my friends took me to the zoo for my birthday and a couple made me some of the sweetest red panda-centric cards I’ve ever received. This was last year, for my 18th birthday. Alas, I am not a very hip teenager.

Ok, I found that video where Jona answers my question. Here it is. And if you are unfortunate enough to not know what red pandas are, check out this and prepare for cute overload.

Here is the brilliant video for See A Penny (Pick It Up):

And so it begins! The barrage of Wildbirds & Peacedrums posts are here. I will try hard to be not quite so post-after-post-after-post as last time. I’ll mix it up. I’ll try.

So I finally got to My Heart in that video I was on about in my last post. I had to wait a while during Doubt/Hope for the video to buffer. Internet connection, such a tease. LOVE when Mariam steps away from mic and sings, then POW! Steel drum/drum interface heaven. Perfect.
