I love this song.

I remember buying this single when it came out in 2007 directly from the FatCat website purely because I adored the artwork. I hadn’t listened to Múm until I saw that 7″ cover, and I thought it was so lovely and colourful that I had to listen. Good thing I did, too! They are a brilliant band.

I got the 7″ in the post and the artwork is on lovely thick card. Get it here. And ‘Marmalade Fires’ really is an amazing song, look at them doing it live here.

I saw them do a short set at Pure Groove last year and I’d love to see them again. If you haven’t listened to Múm then you’re missing out- listen!

I have a couple of friends who dig JJ quite a lot… I couldn’t really make up my mind about them. I like this song a lot though:

It’s such a pretty song but then she goes and sings a line like ‘take me away like I overdosed on heroin’, which is not-so pretty. Her voice is very lovely and the song has a very Beach House-esque dreaminess.

The song comes from ‘jj n° 3′, released earlier this year by Secretly Canadian and Sincerely Yours. There are a couple of other very nice tracks on the album.

The music video is beautifully shot. Listen to more from the Gothenburg duo.

ALELA DIANE IS BRILLIANT. I’ve been listening to her lots over the past day or two. I saw her play a couple of times last year, I really, really want to see her again.

Her voice is just so strong and beautiful; she can really, really sing. Check out her EP with Alina and her latest album and ‘The Pirate’s Gospel’ and anything else she’s done. Oh, and go watch some youtubes of her performing ‘Tatted Lace’. So amazing.

Apparently she asks for a feather in her rider. Awwww, cute. That’s my favourite rider request. And look, there she is with a feather… nifty. Listen to all her music.

I remember Inlets…

I listened to Inlets a long time ago. Inlets is the name of the work by Brooklyn-based Sebastian Krueger. I was so not-taken with what I had heard that I deleted it off of my ipod. I’m keen to revisit it to see if it was just my taste at the time or if I just don’t like it. You can download the 2006 ‘Vestibule’ EP from here.

That was ages ago now. Since then he has recorded and released his first full length ‘Inter Arbiter’. I’ve only listened once so far but it sounds lovely. Sebastian has a beautiful voice which he’s layered several times and made lots of wonderful harmonies  and melodies with. Very nice indeed.

Listen to some songs here.

Two friends of this blog are playing a show at the Union Chapel next Thursday.

Woodpigeon is the work of Canadian wonder Mark Hamilton. Mark is an excellent story teller; he constructs beautifully rich songs that hook you in with their stories and beautiful arrangements. Mark is one of the first musicians I met when I moved to London. He had a solo show at The Slaughtered Lamb in October 2008. When I first came to London I went to almost all my gigs by myself, so I was sitting on the couch drawing comics. Mark came to say hi and was very warm and friendly. He draws too. I’ve seen him play a few more times since then, incuding with a full band. It’s lovely. He has a new record out called ‘Die Stadt Muzikanten’, out now! Listen to some songs on his Myspace.

Secondly, the sweet and brilliant Laura Gibson is supporting. I love listening to Laura sing her beautifully delicate songs so carefully. She makes such beautiful sounds! Her voice in Union Chapel and the silences between words will be incredible.

Y’know who is excited about having Caitlin Rose back!? ME. And probably all the good eggs who bought tickets to her London dates, too. She’s pretty brilliant.

See, listen to this song right here. It’s called ‘Sinful Wishing Well’ and is one of my favourites of hers. If you haven’t picked up her ‘Dead Flower’s’ EP yet: do try and get it. You can get it on vinyl. ‘Sinful Wishing Well’ is not on it but maybe it’ll be on her next release…

Come to the shows. She is very good.

The Local and Anika In London present

Caitlin Rose at The Black Heart

with Joe Pug and Emit Bloch

I am co-promoting a show with my friends The Local next Tuesday at The Black Heart in Camden Town.

Caitlin played a string of shows here last December and she was brilliant. Her voice is something to behold. She’ll be playing some songs from her brilliant ‘Dead Flowers’ EP, released over here via my favourite label- Names Records, and probably some more songs not from the EP and maybe some covers too. How exciting.

You can expect free cake from my friends Dalabella In Cake, the best cake makers this side of anywhere. Just look at the cake they made for Caitlin last time. Personally, I think their cake is getting progressively better. Check out the cake from my last show, with Darwin Deez:

Enticing? HELL YES.

Tickets from We Got Tickets.

HURRAH! And if you haven’t listened to Caitlin yet, you’re missing out. Listen here. And if you’re a film fan, come along on Saturday to have a listen to Caitlin perform before a screening of Badlands, live at Screen on the Green. Visit The Local for tickets and info. Not to be missed.

A combination of lots of nice things. Here is Basia:

The show was promoted by The Local, so I got there in the afternoon to work. Basia arrived around 6pm and was so sweet. She was completely overjoyed to be standing where she was, in London. She loves the city and it was quite the mission to get here- what with the ash cloud. She flew to Paris and got the Eurostar to London. That’s determination!

I listened to her sound-check and her voice is nothing short of incredible. She has amazing projection and even unamplified her voice reaches every corner of the room.

Her main performance was brilliant. Due to the crazy circumstances she was playing as a duo with her friend on uke and singing harmonies, as oppose to a full band setup. She played songs from her most recent release, switiching between keyboard, guitar and a couple of zithers. It was very lovely and a treat to finally get to see Basia play.

Come see her when she’s back! Listen to her songs here.

Ahoy! There are a few jolly nice shows on board the Tamesis Dock this summer. Most exciting of all is Mariee Sioux, the talented Californian songstress. I kind of got to see her last year, but not properly. The first time I was working the door but facing the wrong way so I couldn’t see her, but I could hear she was lovely; the second time was at The Luminaire, we stayed for the beginning but had to leave early.

I would very much recommend popping to the show to hear her pretty songs. May 26th at the Tamesis.

There are plenty more boat shows, head here for more info.
