Welcome to Links To Stuff I Recommend Episode #3. Here is a link to episode two, where you can also find a link to episode one. Exciting. Brace yourself for EVEN MORE excitement:

1. Holly Miranda:

Holly is wonderful. Her album, ‘The Magician’s Private Library’, has been mostly all I’ve listened to all week. A real treasure. I want everyone to hear it and to love it. She’s something special!

2. Timmy Mislock // Abandoned Lighthouse Timmy  is a nice man who plays guitar in Holly’s band. I met him in January and he told me about his own work as Abandoned Lighthouse. He is a brilliant guitarist and has some lovely songs. ‘Love Of My Heart’ and ‘Paper Cranes’ are my favourites on his page there.

3. Siobhan // The Gallery Cafe This week I met a nice lady called Siobhan who does some magic at The Gallery Cafe. In fact, the Gallery Cafe is a pretty magic place in itself. It’s a wee cafe near Bethnal Green that serves vegan and vegetarian food that is also very tasty. The place has a stage and hosts gigs. Siobhan bakes tasty cupcakes and has a genuine love for the bands and promoters she chooses to work with. I think that’s so important.

4. Simon Raymonde // Bella Union Simon is easily one of the greatest people working in music. He loves the bands on his label so much and is motivated to do everything for all the right reasons. Him, Luke and Mark take such great care of the Bella Union bands. I love seeing people work on things they love so passionately and genuinely.

5. Lynn // For Folk’s Sake I really like my friend Lynn and she has a good website too which you can read by clicking on that link there. Our houses are close together now, so I can meander round to hers and we can listen to a promo she has been sent and go ‘no no we don’t like that’ then turn it off and put something great like Tune Yards on, and drink tea and eat hobnobs. She tries to make me watch Gilmore Girls but I do not buy into it.

That’s all for episode #3. Be sure to clicky click all those links to get to see the work of those wonderful and sweet people.

I went and watched an electro opera about Charles Darwin, with music written by The Knife. Probably the most bewildering thing I have ever tried to understand. Here is a photo:

My reaction to this character was: huh?

He did a lot of strutting and rolling on the floor a bit. He didn’t say anything.

Then there was this girl:

I was like: what?

She did a lot of twirls and wandering about.

Then there was this chap:

Here is a thought that I had in my brain while I watched him:

Q: What is he carrying?

A: Looks like a thingy you’d take camping.

Q: Why is he carrying that?

A: He’s going camping? Oh wait, no he’s not.

Q: Why is he wearing that jumper?

A: Cos it’s a bit pretty and probably warm and practical in winter.

Then I decided to just accept I do not understand him.

Let’s focus on this lady instead:

She did lots of operatic singing that I could not understand and had to watch the subtitles above the stage. She was singing in English but she just sang a bit funny. She did lots of slow walking and moving about.

These guys thought they were in the Matrix:

Yes, I understood a whole 0% of that 80 minute performance.

Barbican says this, of the opera:

“The opera presents an image of Darwin that above all reminds us that the world is a place of remarkable similarities and amazing diversity. That over time – tomorrow, in a year, or tomorrow, in a million years – change is inevitable. “

It was very pretty to look at and the dancing was great and the music sounded wonderful, but all I could think was WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?!??!!?!? Visually stunning but so confusing.

I did enjoy it though and I’d love to watch it again so maybe I understand 4% of it or something.

Holly Miranda at Westminster Library

On Tuesday I continued a Holly-centric run of gigs and popped along to Westminster Reference Library. I love the Library! It’s such a wonderful place to see shows. The staff there are so sweet and enthusiastic and it’s just super fun.

I was so excited to see Holly and the band play again. I’m really just repeating myself, but I can’t express how brilliant they are! All four of them in the band. They’re incredible. Holly has a beautiful voice. David Jack Daniels is a brilliant drummer, Will Cameron’s bass parts add so much to every song and he has a great voice; and Timmy is just wonderful. I love when he sings with Holly, and his guitar parts are perfect.

My favourite bits of the set were all of it. They did their Etta James cover again as well as ‘Glass, Concrete & Stone’ by David Byrne. The new songs are wonderful; I can’t wait to hear them on whatever they release next. Watching and hearing Holly sing is something special. It was so hot, all the windows of the library were open and the sound was encompassing. It just felt really special and so lovely. There’s so much soul and beauty in her voice.

I have so much love for this. One of my favourite bands I’ve seen play. And I’ve heard hundreds and hundreds of people sing live, and not many have had voices quite as breathtakingly wonderful as Holly’s.

It’s so joyous finding something to love as much as this. When you think how many shows I go to, it doesn’t really happen all that often. I mean; I get to see loads of stuff which I often love- but then there are these really special bands that just completely capture me. Like Wildbirds & Peacedrums, The Antlers, Scary Mansion, She Keeps Bees… I did the same thing with those bands. I saw them all lots in a very small amount of time and listened to their albums a million times. They are my favourites, pretty much. I love what they do so, so much. I love loads of other acts too, of course, but I haven’t gotten to do that thing where I see them play like four times in the space of a week. You really know if you love a band if you can watch them so many times and not be bored.

I love when this happens! You should listen to the songs and see a show and maybe you’ll feel the same. I’m going to see them play again at Field Day on Saturday: YESSSSSSSSSS!

I could praise her loads or you could just see for yourself. I filmed this at the Library show:

Watch it here or go to Youtube to watch it big in HD. Or you can watch it in HD here too (go for 720p, 1080p will kill your internet because it’s so giant). I recommend it- it’s so great. The song is an unreleased one. Watch all the way through so you can get to the joyous, beautiful rock out at the end. All the library windows were open, I’m surprised there were no noise complaints. But then, how could anyone complain at such a sweet sound? They couldn’t, surely!

I’ll write more about the show soon. But really, watch that video. They are an incredible band; I love it so much. So special.

Lovely to see Holly again.

She is completely wonderful. So much love for Holly- her voice is so special and her songs are wonderful. Listen.

Live shots are here.

Holly Miranda at The Borderline

Holly Miranda is one of those acts for whom I do that thing where I go to all their shows. Because she is incredible and I’m quite happy to watch someone being incredible repeatedly. Jolly lovely!

I know I’ve been harping on about how fantastic she is alot, but I really can’t urge you enough to check out her songs. Her debut full length ‘The Magician’s Private Library’, released this year via XL, is one of my favourite albums of 2010. It’s gloriously dark and rich. Her voice is something special.

The show at the Borderline was Holly’s first headline show in London; it was a treat to hear her and her band play a full set. Sweetly, the show was sold out and the crowd were really into it. I love that. So great to see someone making great songs getting deserved recognition.

The band is made up of Holly, Timmy Mislock on guitar, Will Carl Cameron on bass and David Jack Daniels smashing the drums. They are an incredible band. The setlist was made up of most of the songs from ‘The Magician’s Private Library’ including ‘Forest Green Oh Forest Green’ and ‘High Tide’ which I hadn’t heard them do before. They also did their brilliant cover of Yoko Ono’s ‘Nobody Sees Me Like You Do’. They played a bunch of new songs, ending the set with ‘Pelican Rapids’. It’s completely stunning and totally amazing. The bass slide in that song and the cacophony and clamor that follows is completely euphoric.

They returned for an encore of Etta James’ ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and ‘Joints’. Holly’s voice is filled with so much soul and beauty.

What a special show.

Timmy is a super nice guy and a brilliant guitarist, singer and jangler of bells. He is one of the three chaps who make up Holly Miranda’s incredible band:

They were so excellent tonight.

Sad news! As reported on Wears The Trousers, Annika Norlin has decided to call it a day with her music career, announcing that a new Hello Saferide album (released in the spring) will be the last. She cites the pressure and stress of her success to be too much, and has decided to take up a five year degree.

It’s a huge shame but also understandable. While she may have been massive in Sweden, she seemed to be sadly overlooked here. I caught her set at ATP and she completely blew me away; she and her band were incredible.

Update: The newspaper that broke the story got it wrong. She’s not going to quit, phew & yay etc!

In comic form.

Cat Martino sings with Sharon sometimes and has a beautiful voice herself and some lovely songs.

Listen to these pretty songs. The strings in ‘Tangerine Dress’ are beautiful. Strings and piano is lovely. Beautiful, beautiful vocals.
