Caitlin Rose at The Scala

Caitlin Rose is brilliant. She always seems a wee bit nervous and self depreciating, but it’s pretty charming, and perhaps she just doesn’t realise just how wonderful she is. She does, however, know how wonderful her band are (rightly so), which is pretty sweet. They really are fantastic.
Jordan plays bass and sings beautifully. She’s a great bassist and her bass parts add a huge amount to the songs, particularly on ones like ‘Sinful Wishing Well’. Jeremy is an incredible guitarist and adds lots of twangy flourishes and throws down some excellent solos. The trio have been playing with a talented guy called Spencer on pedal steel and he is really great; his parts are such a perfect addition to the band’s sound.
Caitlin herself really is a wonder. The best parts are when she steps away from the mic and you can her sheer vocal power. She’s got an amazing voice. She wrote some really brilliant songs. She plays with a great band. A win on all counts! And also, Caitlin is utterly lovely; and, in fact, so is her whole band and her wonderful label, Names. It only makes you want to be more supportive and see her do really well and for great things to happen, because she totally deserves it.
I look forward to the next (eleventh!) time I see her play. Listen to her album!
Hey Anika, I was at the show too and thought Caitlin (and the band) were great. I had heard a lot about her but this was the first time I had managed to catch her live. I thought Timber Timbre were OK but too one dimensional – I like melancholy in music but they do need to lighten up a bit. I was expecting big things from Phosphorescent but thought they were very poor indeed. The crap sound didn’t help but decent bands can deal with that. My brother summed it up perfectly when he said that they sounded like a bad covers band. I should get back to work (but not for much longer – it is Friday after all) and I shall continue to lament not having bought a ticket for the Wilco show next week… Rob
