Warpaint at Scala

Holy moly, Warpaint are awesome. I saw them earlier this year at the Luminaire (when I took that photo) and thought they were pretty brilliant. Now, just 5 months later, they managed to sell out the Scala; a venue over double the size of the Luminaire…
I went to this Scala show with a skeptical outlook. Now, I really dig Warpaint, but alot of folk rave about them as if they are the best thing ever. I know they are good, but are they really that good? I wondered if the hype was just people getting caught up in it all and hyping for the sake of hyping.
But no, Warpaint really are that good. They’re incredible. Totally hypnotic, and excellent musicians. The performance was much tighter than at the Luminaire show. Emily Kokal has become an even more charismatic singer, Jenny Lee Lindberg is completely enchanting playing the bass. Drummer Stella Mozgawa is phenomenal. Theresa Wayman’s voice is beautiful. It’s kind of eerie when Emily and Theresa sing together. Warpaint feel sort of like being underwater at night time. In a hedge maze. The sound is engulfing, the changes in tempo are exciting… each song builds and builds; it’s tight, but at the same time feels totally loose and natural. The songs flow into each other seamlessly.
Each player is so into what they’re doing; and they’re so comfortable playing together. You could tell they were thoroughly enjoying it and feeding off of the energy of the songs and the audience. Returning for an encore after an hour long set, the very last song they play is ‘Billie Holiday’. They coo out that ‘B I L L I E H O L I D A Y’ hookand it’s spellbinding, before ending in a rock-out with Jenny and Stella smashing the drums together and Emily collapsed on the floor.
Go see this band live. And get ‘The Fool’. Looking forward to seeing them again.
