Halloween Bandstand Busking

Our darkest busk to date. The bandstand was totally packed out; jolly nice of folk to come along as oppose to staying home and watching Halloween/Carrie/Night of the Living Dead/Hills Have Eyes etc etc etc.

The clocks went back and I’m hella tired. G’night.

I’ve felt like listening to ‘Apply’ on repeat all of today. I love the layers of sound at the end of the song.

I listened to ‘Ring’ twice through this morning; it’s such a great album. I love that it truly is like a ring; it feels perfectly formed and the flow of songs is wonderful – each track would be a perfect beginning or end to the album. The whole album is excellent. Glasser were brilliant live; I really look forward to catching them again when they’re back.

Here’s the dizzying video for ‘Mirrorage’, another great song from ‘Ring’.

I loooove when the Fever Ray-esque vocal distortion kicks in.

Watching Night of the Living Dead (the original of course) and it reminded me of this. I used to love Tilly so much! Whatever happened to them…

LET ME HAVE IT! LET ME GRAB YOUR SOUL! WOAH OH HO YOU KNOW! IT’S ME! CATHYYYYYYYYYYY

Best. Ever.

Warpaint at Scala

Holy moly, Warpaint are awesome. I saw them earlier this year at the Luminaire (when I took that photo) and thought they were pretty brilliant. Now, just 5 months later, they managed to sell out the Scala; a venue over double the size of the Luminaire…

I went to this Scala show with a skeptical outlook. Now, I really dig Warpaint, but alot of folk rave about them as if they are the best thing ever. I know they are good, but are they really that good? I wondered if the hype was just people getting caught up in it all and hyping for the sake of hyping.

But no, Warpaint really are that good. They’re incredible. Totally hypnotic, and excellent musicians. The performance was much tighter than at the Luminaire show. Emily Kokal has become an even more charismatic singer, Jenny Lee Lindberg is completely enchanting playing the bass. Drummer Stella Mozgawa is phenomenal. Theresa Wayman’s voice is beautiful. It’s kind of eerie when Emily and Theresa sing together. Warpaint feel sort of like being underwater at night time. In a hedge maze. The sound is engulfing, the changes in tempo are exciting… each song builds and builds; it’s tight, but at the same time feels totally loose and natural. The songs flow into each other seamlessly.

Each player is so into what they’re doing; and they’re so comfortable playing together. You could tell they were thoroughly enjoying it and feeding off of the energy of the songs and the audience. Returning for an encore after an hour long set, the very last song they play is ‘Billie Holiday’. They coo out that ‘B I L L I E H O L I D A Y’  hookand it’s spellbinding, before ending in a rock-out with Jenny and Stella smashing the drums together and Emily collapsed on the floor.

Go see this band live. And get ‘The Fool’. Looking forward to seeing them again.

I’m really digging the Happy Birthday album, out via Sub Pop.

The band have a show at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen next week on the 4th; I’m looking forward to checking out their live show. Brilliant fuzzy guitar based pop songs.

I love this video:

The new single from Vivian Girl Katy Goodman. It sounds probably exactly how you’d imagine it to sound.

PRETTY

These are A3 sized ink paintings in my room. They are characters who have entered into the annual beauty contest and either been granted or denied entry (the reasons for denial are cited), however I find all the applicants to be pretty in their own right.

I am covering my whole wall with them.

Wise Blood

I have not one single clue how I came across this band. I can’t remember at all. I downloaded their `+` EP from Bandcamp a few months ago and completely forgot about it, and didn’t even unzip the file until yesterday, when I was clearing my hard drive. I noticed that little ‘ `+` ‘ file and had no idea what it was…

I unzipped it and put it on my ipod. I listened today, and wowzers. It’s brill. Lo-fi, sample filled, hip-hop, pop tunes. I don’t usually dig this kind of stuff… but I love this short little selection of songs. 5 songs long and 10 minutes in total.

They’re no longer giving it away for free, but it’s well worth $5 of your monies via Bandcamp.

Wye Oak are supporting Spoon on the 16th November at Shepherd’s Bush Empire… I hope I can go along. Wye Oak are awesome. See:

Proved it. More solid proof lays in their wonderful album ‘The Knot’, and the brilliant ‘My Neighbor/My Creator’ EP. So great.
